The Pedicab Project records, preserves, and shares American oral histories collected within community through a series of pedicab rides physically operated by Michelle. In the Philippines, the pedicab is a modified tricycle that provides much-needed transportation, employment and income for many Filipinos. The Pedicab Project explores the artist’s own cultural heritage (being a half-white, half-Filipino American) as an influence on her artwork relating to community identity, and offers a platform for passengers to share their own stories relating, but not limited to, race, culture, and heritage. Michelle seeks to highlight her bi-cultural heritage and engage communities in conversation about their own individual and collective cultural identities. The project will culminate in the archiving of recorded conversations and will be available to the public through an interactive website and local exhibition.
